FAMILY CAMP #1 July 4-10
We are excited to introduce the Rev. Dr. Chris Croghan.
Chris is
the Director of the Luther House of Study at Augustana College
and Sioux Falls Seminary.
Chris was a parish pastor for five years
prior to pursuing and obtaining a Ph.D. in Church History. His
area of expertise is in the Lutheran Reformation.
Chris and his
wife Lori have two children, Jacob and Sara. They all love attending
family camps. They also have fond memories of RTLC. Lori was a
backpack guide in the early 90's and Chris brought youth groups
to RTLC when he served as a pastor.
Chris’ Bible study theme will
be An Uncomfortable Comfort: Paul's letter
to the Galatians. Few
writings have stirred the thoughts and emotions of believers like
Paul's letter to the Galatians.
Paul's writing, since the day it was proclaimed,
informs our ideas of righteousness, sin, grace and the law.
Our goal is to look
carefully at what Paul understood to be at stake when one preaches the gospel
of
Christ crucified and raised from the dead. As well, we will assess how such
preaching resonates in our world today. _____________________
FAMILY CAMP #2 August 8-14
We are excited to introduce the Rev. Peter
Marty as the adult Bible study leader for our August family camp.
Peter
serves as senior pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church, a 3200-member
congregation in Davenport, Iowa. He is a frequent preacher and
speaker at colleges, churches, and conferences across the country.
Author of more than 60 articles on leadership, preaching, and
parish renewal in America, Peter is also the author of The Anatomy
of Grace (Augsburg Fortress, 2008). From 2004-2009, he was host
of the national radio broadcast, Grace Matters. He is the recipient
of an honorary doctorate from St. Ambrose University (Doctor
of Humanities).
Peter is married to Susan and they have two children
in college – Jacob and Rachel.
He enjoys family travel, woodworking, tennis, French horn, reading, and the adventure
of waking up to a new day every day. You may know him better as Jake Marty’s
(RTLC staff) dad.
Peter’s Bible study theme will be A No-Nonsense Guide to
Christian Living. His study will be shot through with biblical insights
and metaphor. It is intended to show how we might distinguish between faith and
religion. Religion is built on beliefs, creeds, and propositions; faith is heavily
grounded in relationship.
Each day will be oriented around two word themes: Certainty
and Doubt (The opposite of faith is not doubt, but certainty) Feelings and Faith (Acting your way into feelings vs. feeling your way into actions) Promise and
Threat (Debunking the central role of fear in guiding our lives) We and Them (Eliminating
a boundary-marker kind of faith) Mystery and Mess (The church is comprised of
both, and yet remains the garden of God’s grace) Legalism and Grace (Sorting through
the biggest “hiccup” for Christian believers) Justice and Fairness (The Bible
seems more interested in the former than the latter) _____________________
James
Hersch, our resident family camp musician, will be joining
us again for both camps. For over twenty three years, acclaimed
writer, singer and guitarist James Hersch has been quietly
building a repertoire of work that puts him squarely on the
edge of acoustic music's importance in North American culture.
You will love his music, and the stories that he tells will
touch your soul. To learn more about James, click here.
